Aproveché una escala de 24 horas en Madrid de camino a casa tras mi reciente viaje a Andalucía para ver El burlador de Sevilla, la obra original española sobre Don Juan. Según el profesor de la Universidad de Wisconsin R. John McCaw, se desconoce el origen exacto de la obra. Sin embargo, lo más probable es que fuera escrita -en Madrid, no en Sevilla- a principios de la década de 1620 por el dramaturgo Tirso de Molina.
Como me especialicé en lingüística y no en español, nunca había leído El burlador de Sevilla y, de hecho, no sabía mucho sobre el teatro del Siglo de Oro. Así que, antes de viajar a España, me compré un ejemplar de la edición del profesor McCaw y me puse a estudiarla en serio. Para que sepan lo buen estudiante que sigo siendo, después de todos estos años fuera de la escuela, aquí tienen un escaneo de una página que muestra cómo marqué el libro. Lo que aprendí fue tan interesante que me gustaría compartirlo con ustedes.
Los dramaturgos del Siglo de Oro como Tirso de Molina tenían que ser increíblemente hábiles. Hacían lo que hace cualquier dramaturgo -contar una historia emocionante, desarrollar sus personajes, etc.- y al mismo tiempo encajar su español en un conjunto de patrones de rima específicos. Como explica el profesor McCaw en su introducción, la mayor parte de El burlador se ajusta a uno de los seis patrones de rima, cada uno definido por cuatro parámetros:
